Doha Bank Group Chief Executive Officer Dr. R. Seetharaman said: “This special edition of Al Dana Green Run on 24th November is an opportunity for the people of Qatar to demonstrate their commitment to environmental causes which are particularly important today. We encourage everyone to save the date, participate and have a great time. We are proud that Qatar is the host of the prestigious UN Climate Change summit in 2012 and want to demonstrate our commitment to the country’s pioneering role in the Middle East of working towards making a difference in our communities as well as bringing the world together to promote dialogue and achieve consensus on such an important global subject.”
Sessions of the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP8), will be held at the iconic Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha from 26 November to 7 December 2012 and Doha Bank will be hosting this special edition of Al Dana Green Run just prior to the event, encouraging people from all over Qatar to demonstrate their commitment to the environment during this time when the world’s top environmental advocates and policymakers will be in Doha to chart a course for a more sustainable future.
Dr. Seetharaman says: “Doha Bank is particularly committed to creating a strong platform for the youth of today to contribute to the progressive socio-environmental and intellectual development of society. Doha Bank hosts the Al Dana Green Run each year because we firmly believe that our objectives as corporate and individual representatives of the community should include the commitment to reduce our overall carbon footprint and ensure sustainable development.”
Every year, Al Dana Green Run raises awareness of wild life preservation and environmental protection, amongst many other subjects that impact the environment and ecosystem. Professionals and homemakers, men, women and children, sports enthusiasts and members of various socio-cultural groups actively participate in the event.
The run also helps reinforce Doha Bank’s message as the bank to have introduced the very first Green Account in Qatar, wherein all banking transactions are done through electronic channels, thus rationing the use of paper. Being pioneers of promoting Green in the region, Doha Bank also introduced the Green Card, which allows customers to accumulate loyalty points and contribute them towards green causes through international organizations.
Doha Bank is a leading advocate in Qatar and the region for key sustainability and environmental issues and conducts perennial campaigns to raise awareness among people and encourage them to think green. The Bank believes such critical support for environmental causes is best achieved by incorporating green values and also by approaching information sharing and awareness from the grassroots of our society.
In 2011, Doha Bank worked with UNESCO to jointly launch the nationwide ECO-Schools Programme in Qatar. The programme, which continues to be actively implemented in Qatar, is designed to encourage and support schools in the country to proactively participate in the implementation of good environmental practices, reduction of carbon footprint and increased eco consciousness.
Dr. Seetharaman has also hosted numerous road shows and seminars on the subject of Global Warming and Climate Change. Such events, to date, have been held in Qatar, The UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, and India.
Doha Bank was also one of the major sponsors of the first ever Doha Green Conference held in 2009, which covered key issues that will help lead the market’s transformation towards greater sustainability. Among the other programs the bank has actively participated in are the State of Qatar’s “Green Qatar Clean Qatar” campaign, Public Awareness Campaigns through the Bank’s channels, and key community engagement programs such as tree planting, beach clean-ups and recycling activities.
More than 1,500 people from all walks of life supported Doha Bank’s green causes in the most recent annual Al Dana Green Run held in January 2012, which was the seventh annual Al Dana Green Run hosted by the Bank. Doha Bank is expecting equally exuberant turnout for the special 8th Al Dana Green run which commemorates the UN Climate Change Conference this year.
